AI Literacy’s Role in Youth Possibility Development: A Cross-Disciplinary Conversation

This panel brings together three leading scholars to discuss the role of AI literacy— using Long & Magerko’s (2020) definition, “competencies users need in order to effectively interact with and critically evaluate AI”— in helping youth cultivate, explore and realize possibilities in their lives.

Dr. Shiyan Jiang, whose focus has been researching AI in K-12 education, will discuss what it means for K-12 students to cultivate AI literacy, and learn with and about AI, in different school subjects. Dr. Duri Long, whose focus has been in the field of human-computer interaction (HCI) will offer foundational insights into the core principles that have shaped AI literacy research as a pioneer in the field. Dr. Li Ke, a science education researcher, will highlight emerging opportunities for integrating AI literacy into science learning.

It will be clear from each brief presentation that AI literacy will grow in importance for youth possibility development; what will also be clear are several ways how.

Looking into disciplinary differences enriches this dialogue. All three panelists approach the topic of AI literacy from different disciplinary and/or sub-disciplinary perspectives, and this will itself be a topic of discussion. How certain scholarly focuses have contributed to understandings of AI literacy, how subject-specific ways of knowing influence students’ engagement in AI learning activities, and what innovations in curriculum and teacher preparation are needed to support meaningful and accessible AI learning; all of these questions will be thought through and discussed.

Bios:

  • Dr. Shiyan Jiang is an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education whose research focuses on the intersection of artificial intelligence, education, and identity. She explores how teachers across different disciplines integrate AI into their practice and how students negotiate their sense of self as critical thinkers, creators and informed participants in an AI-driven world.

  • Dr. Duri Long is an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University’s School of Communication whose research focuses on human-centered AI, AI literacy, and human-AI interaction. She combines learning sciences, design research, and cognitive science to develop co-creative AI experiences and informal learning environments that help the public engage meaningfully with AI.

  • Dr. Li Ke (柯立) is an Assistant Professor of Science Education at the University of Washington College of Education. His research focuses on meaningful science teaching and learning via disciplinary practices such as modeling, especially in the context of complex societal issues like pandemics and climate change
